We breathe in and out all day without ever giving it much thought, but it’s actually a rather complicated process. Essentially, we breathe in oxygen, which our bodies need to survive, and then breathe out carbon dioxide, a gas that can be harmful if we have too much in our bodies.
Trees and plants “breathe” too, but they breathe opposite from us. They take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which they need to survive, and then release oxygen back out into the world.
Oxygen and carbon dioxide are gasses. Gasses are invisible, but they surround us all the time. Watch this video to learn how to create carbon dioxide and see how to use it to blow out a candle. Make sure to ask an adult to help you with your candle.
